Sage Date, who bears the Armor of Halo and wields a nodachi with one or both hands, is the quiet and thoughtful Ronin, meaning he takes everything into consideration while having the calmess to stay focused. It's been said that when he was younger Sage had a violent temper that caused him to lose control. He learned to control his temper through meditiation and playing the bamboo flute through the insistence of his grandfather. Through this, Sage became what some consider the most mature Ronin. At times he seems cold, especially when dealing with enemies or when he is concerned with someone's safety. This coldness may seem off-putting at first, but it shows Sage's true nature to care, particularly those who cannot protect themselves. Example: Mia and Yulie. During episode 7 of Ronin Warriors- Splitting the Stone, Sage senses evil following them to Mount Dojo. When they arrive, Sage demands Mia to tell him where Kento is and demands she go back. His excuse, "Mia, you'll just slow me down," disguises his concern as impatience with her. Sage is more gentle with animals and respects them a lot, except for Cale's wolves or any animal influenced by Dynasty evil trying to attack him or someone he cares about. His kanji is wisdom, though this is a mistake. In the dubbed version of the OVAs and in the subbed version of Yoroiden Samurai Troopers, his kanji is righftfully called grace.
Sage's family descended from Date Masamue, a famous general known as the One-Eyed Dragon, who built a castle in Sendai, the capital of Miyagi. In the Date clan, women hold the power, but his grandfather was responsible for his upbringing. Like his grandfather, Sage was educated as a Bushi warrior and trained in the art of Kendo. His father is a police officer and his mother is a doctor who works at the hospital. He has two sisters, an older sister named Yayoi, who teased him so much that he developed an inability to communicate with girls. This teasing came from when Sage was little and was dressed in girl clothing. As a child, Sage's health was fragile and was dressed in girl clothing on the belief that girls were easier to raise than boys. Satsuki, his younger sister, is more calmer than Sage and Yayoi. She is the only member of the Date family who speaks improperly.
The armor of Halo was a family legend that had been passed on from generation to generation. One day while in Middle School, Sage was challenged to a Kendo competition by Kazamatsuri Shingo, a rival known for his pactice of Kendo. Against his wishes, Sage agreed, and entered the competition against Shingo. Sage was beating Shingo, which didn't go too well with the latter competitor, and he threw sand in Sage's eyes. In response, Sage knocked Shingo's faceplate off and knocked him off the ring. This earned Sage swift punishment from his grandfather, but it would also awaken the Halo/Korin armor that Sage found when he was locked inside the basement. Thus Sage had gained the armor and became a Ronin Warrior/Samurai Trooper.
