Anubis was once a power driven soldier who stopped at nothing to achieve what he desired the most, absolute control. His conquests were cruel and many fell under his attacks. His cruelty soon caught the eye of the demon Talpa who enlisted him as his number one Warlord, making him the leader of the four dark Warlords, subjugated only to Talpa's command and under no one else's Driven by the need to gain more power, Anubis stopped at nothing to get it, even if that meant hurting anyone or using anyone. Under Talpa's influence, his desire for power grew and with it his cruelty. He had been given armor called Ogre or Cruelty in the dubbed version. The armor came with a weapon, a kuri-sami, which was a scythe attached to a heavy weighted chain. The armor itself represented the Spring season and was known for drawing its power from dark thoughts in which it released that power back into Anubis' ultimate attack, "Quake with Fear!" (Ko Rei Sai!" which translates to "Red Lightning!"in the Japanese version).
Anubis was the first Warlord to go up against the Ronin Warriors, and he was certain he had tasted victory because the Ronins were weak and inexperienced. This arrogant cockiness would commit to his failure in defeating all five of the Ronin Warriors throughout the first half of the series, serving to only aggravate him when his fellow Warlords began to mock and question his ability to lead them. During a confrontation between Ryo and Rowen in Episode 10, In the Sea of the Sky, Anubis succeeds in knocking Ryo out during a battle, but finds himself hesitating to deliver a killing blow. His distraction with his own thoughts unprepared him for an attack by Rowen who split his helmet in half, revealing to Rowen that he was a human being when initially the Ronins had believed the Warlords were demons. Embarrassed and outraged, Anubis tried attacking Rowen but was stopped and brought back to the Dynasty by Talpa, who would later severely punish him for insubordination. Following this, Anubis began to further question Talpa and his own loyalty to Talpa.
During another attack against the Ronin Warriors, he was soundly defeated into unconsciousness, where he was eventually taken aside by the Ancient One who told him the truth of Talpa's cruelty and that Talpa truly did not care for him, that only Anubis' armor mattered. Anubis saw this to be true, especially when Cale, Rajura, and Sekhmet captured him and brought back to Talpa who imprisoned him within the confines of the Dynasty's castle. The Ancient One had ultimately influenced Anubis into deciding which side he wanted to fight for, opening his eyes to a better path that in itself became rewarding. He followed in the Ancient One's footsteps, temporary taking over his place until his descendant, Kayura, could be rescued from the Dynasty and Talpa's influence.
